debate ever. randall pinkston joins us from new york with the latest. >> reporter: from start to finish, it was a political slugfest. president obama and mitt romney clashing on a host of issues at times accusing each other of not telling the truth. it was a very different exchange from the first debate. reporter: president obama and mitt romney wasted little time going after each other in the second debate. >> there were a whole bunch of oil companies. >> i had a question. how much did you cut them by? >> you want me to answer? >> i'm happy to answer the question. >> reporter: in a snap poll of uncommitted voters 37% said president obama won the debate. >> the picture is becoming more clear as to how sort of sketchy all of the romney/ryan assertions are. >> reporter: romney comes out on top when voters were asked who would do a better job with the economy. >> i think a lot of undecided voters who tuned in tonight heard from the governor himself how he would perform as president of the united states.

>> reporter: president obama can claim victory on the question of who would be better for the middle class. foreign policy played a key role in the debate when the question turned to the attack in benghazi, libya. >> it took the president 14 days before he called the attack in benghazi an act of terror. >> get the transcript. >> he did in fact, sir. so let me call it an act of terrorism. >> can you say that a little louder candy. >> reporter: democrats crowed about the moderator fact checking governor romney. >> why did they go to the talk shows to suggest it was the result of a mob reacting to a youtube video? >> reporter: the two candidates will have a chance to answer more questions on libya next monday at the third and final debate which is focused entirely on foreign policy. one of the things that romney did throughout the debate was to remind voters that president obama had failed to keep his campaign promises especially with respect to repairing the economy and president obama wrapped up his remarks by

reminding voters that in a speech, romney had written off 47% of american voters. reporting live in hempstead, new york, i'm randall pinkston, back to you. >> thank you. i guess it doesn't matter who won. it matters if anyone was swayed. independent voters, have you heard anything on that? were people touched by this debate? is it going to make a difference? >> reporter: well, you know, it's too early to know. we have had a couple of snap polls one showing that president obama won the debate, the cbs snap poll 30% range. cnn stop? poll has it at 49%. but it's going to take time for all of the information to shall we say settle out for people to parse through what they said and what some of the fact checkers are finding out. there were shadings of truth. there were some outright contradictions. a lot of things to sort through. of course, there's also that nonquantitative aspect of any

francisco last night to remember ambassador chris stevens. ♪ [ music ] stevens was killed last month in an attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. among those at yesterday's memorial service were mayor ed lee and senator dianne feinstein. the libyan ambassador to the united states expressed his government's regret. >> we're very sorry. you send us one of your best diplomats but unfortunate will not be able to protect him. >> he said stevens was a good diplomat because he was interested in the lives of the libyan people. during the service has younger sister anne said his optimism inspired her to learn about the middle east. chris stevens of course a graduate of cal and grew up in piedmont and a good guy. i went to college with him. >> you were there at the service. >> i was there. i was really touched. his two sisters are doctors, his brother is a very good attorney.

they both spoke. and a lot of laughter, george schultz former secretary of state, 92, got up there and just brought it all home. he was amazing. and the ambassador to libya, he was really -- >> chris was quite the character and his family -- >> chris was just a light up your smile kind of guy, just a really, really, really good guy and i had never met his family before but i was mighty impressed. it was a really nice tribute. let's check traffic and weather. >> a nice day ahead in the bay area. the temperatures are all over the map this morning. just the last hour it was 70 in fairfield. they received some gusty winds dropped down to 60 but still mild. 56 in san jose. 59 in san francisco. high pressure building in overhead. the offshore winds blowing. the fire danger will be elevated for most of the bay area although red flag warnings are going up for solano county in the sacramento valley where

we are expecting stronger gusty winds there throughout the day. warm everywhere you go. usually in the 70s this afternoon, well, a lot warmer than that. 80s and low 90s by the afternoon. enjoy it going to see a couple of days of this. rain next week. let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> towards the san mateo bridge, i mentioned an accident so it is going against the commute. it's in the eastbound lanes of 92 but it is an overturn accident. look, you can see sounds like emergency crews heading to the scene if you look at the right side. that's where you see those flashing lights. so again, the accident is block lanes in the eastbound lanes of 92 pretty close to the high- rise. again we're hearing a vehicle on its roof possibly injuries. so we'll let you know what is going on but it is likely causing delays leaving foster city and the peninsula heading towards hayward. elsewhere, bay bridge quick look here. no metering lights yet. we are seeing some delays in cash lanes and an earlier stall has been cleared.

that's traffic. back to you guys. >> thank you. overnight sections of an america's cup catamaran were towed back to shore. the 72-foot boat flipped over, drifted through the golden gate and broke up into pieces. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran reports. >> reporter: the team says this is a big setback for them. it appears their boat is a complete loss and today sailors will be reviewing data and tape to see what happened. you can see on this map right here just how far that boat drifted. the current pushed the catamaran past the golden gate bridge at least 7 miles out to sea. this whole thing happened at 3 p.m. when the racing yacht was in practice runs. that's when sailors said the back of the boat lifted up winds at 25 knots with the wind going one way and the sea another. the boat flipped. >> you learn a lot more if we hadn't done this. the team will come back stronger. we know how hard we can push it

and the limits and, you know, what to do, safety-wise, how to get off and unharmed. >> reporter: this is the team's 8th day practicing on the bay and also the strongest tide of the year. the wind did major damage to the catamaran snapping up the 13-story tall wing into pieces. oracle team usa says this is the first major incidents with the newer longer boats. live in san francisco at pier 80, cate caugiran, cbs 5. >> thank you. today consumer advocates plan to protest the choice of mediator for talks on the san bruno pipeline disaster. the state puc has chosen former senator george mitchell to guide negotiations between the state, pg&e and the city of san bruno over compensation. but that's being called a back room deal by the utility reform network. it cites the fact mitchell's law firm has represented major utilities before. the giants and cardinals back on today. game 3 of the national league championship series will kick off 1:00 our time.

friends and family out there. a 4.0 struck west of portland, maine last night. at first some thought it was a big explosion. it was felt as far away as boston and connecticut. there are reports of some minor damage including some cracks in a house. this is the second strongest quake in maine's history. experts say that's because of the east coast geology. the effects of earthquakes can be felt in an area 10 times larger than quakes of a similar size here on the west coast. today is the 23rd anniversary of of the loma prieta anniversary in northern california. at noon today san francisco's department of emergency management will hold a press conference in union square. officials there will commemorate the deadly quake that happened in 1989 and also encouraged participation in a drill tomorrow called the great california shake-out. 6:16. let's check the weather. it's going to be heating up more today. >> i know. 90 is that right? can we see you over there? >> i think we'll see 90s in the bay area even some 70s mid-

70s at the coastline. so yes, today is going to be one of those gorgeous day where we have some major changes over the next 7 days. outside now, mostly clear skies. a little sea haze out there. temperature has been jumping all over the map this morning. 70s in fairfield dropped back down to 60. the air is warm above the surface and will mix down so everybody is warming up today but there are some big changes coming in our direction as we'll see the first major cold front and rain making its way into the bay area next week. right now fire danger high especially into the sacramento valley. red flag warnings, above 1,000 feet gusty winds to 30 miles per hour with low humidity combining with a hot temperature, causes high fire danger. traveling around the u.s. looking good. right out of san francisco, great today. you will see sunny skies about 82. around the country maybe some trouble spots into houston. slight chance of some showers there. in chicago, expect some thunderstorms. and by the way talking about the giants game today there's a

90% chance of some thunderstorms there today. we could see some delays in that game. temperatures around the bay today looking good under sunny skies. 84 degrees in san jose. but look at the coastline. how about that? mid-70s into half moon bay. and pacifica. east bay temperatures 80s and low 90s. and inside the bay beautiful in san francisco, about 80 degrees this afternoon. 72 in daly city. and about 77 degrees in bodega bay. next couple of days, we'll keep the heat on and start to cool off late in the day tomorrow. more fog on the way for friday. cooler temperatures over the weekend and next week, yup, here comes that storm system maybe rain on monday and tuesday then maybe another storm right after that, elizabeth. >> here she comes, the storm door is opening. in the meantime, we're nice and dry outside but still following a couple of problem spots including across the san mateo bridge. it's going against the commute so probably not huge delays but eastbound 92 leaving foster city there is an overturn accident so at this point we are not hearing about injuries but the car is on its roof.

so they are definitely possible. and in our last traffic report we saw an emergency crew in those westbound lanes heading to the scene. so again that's eastbound 92 right past the high-rise. let's go to our maps show you what else is going on westbound 580. first towards the bay bridge where they just turned on the metering lights at 6:11. so now we are seeing delays in those outer cash lanes and middle fastrak lanes. it's stacking up beyond the overcrossing. westbound 580 brake lights leaving the altamont pass. that's traffic and weather together every 10 minutes. back to you guys. >> thank you. new this morning, police in denver believe a fire at a bar was set to hide five murders. the fire was first reported in east denver at about 2 a.m. local time. four women and one man were found dead inside. the police chief says it appears the victim died of injuries not connected to the fire. and the five were likely the only people inside when the fire started. a mighty rough road ahead for lance armstrong.

their favor. it was blowing in one direction and the current in the opposite and they tried to turn the boat. then the boat overturned along with some of the 13 crewmembers. >> creates a very steep wake and it's very easy to stick the noses in on the boat and capsizes occur. >> not sure what happened. and we'll have to review the data and the video. >> reporter: now, a few hours later that boat was completely in the water and the wing that's about 13 stories tall was thrashed along with the hull. if you take a look at the map you can see how far the current pushed the catamaran, past the golden gate bridge and at least 7 miles out to sea. the time now says this is a major setback for them but it is an important lesson that they will learn moving forward. america's cup says this won't affect the race schedule next year. cate caugiran, cbs 5. oakland officials are showing signs of a compromise in the face of a federal

government takeover of the city's police department. phil matier reports oakland city council members are considering a plan to let an outside receiver take over opd's internal affairs division. a federal judge recently said the opd has taken took to implement changes that were part of a brutality lawsuit settlement. the saratoga man missing more than three weeks was found dead over the weekend. 32-year-old eric garcia was last seen at a party in san jose. a hiker found his body saturday on a trail in santa cruz county. investigators believe he was murdered. no word on the motive or suspect. garcia's harley-davidson motorcycle is missing. the mother accused of using her 10-year-old daughter to steal groceries is blaming her ex-boyfriend. investigators say 38-year-old marcy keelin and her daughter were trying to steal from a safeway in morgan hill. when caught she abandoned her daughter. keelin who was in court yesterday said she has always been a good mother. she told "san jose mercury news" it was her then boyfriend

that left her daughter. she claims she was at a park with her son. it is 6:33. get you out the door with traffic and weather. are you ready for a heat wave? >> it could spark problems. >> it could. fire danger is going to be running high but only in solano county into the sacramento valley. it will be elevated around the rest of the bay area so be careful. what a gorgeous day it's going to be. clear over the bay waters, calm start to the day. we have seen winds in parts of the east bay but that's about it so far. temperatures now running mainly into the 50s. by the afternoon, these numbers soaring under high pressure and a strong ridge settling in overhead and high fire danger in the delta and central valley. numbers look like this, 80s in morgan hill, 84 san jose, east bay in the 80s and 90s. but this is where it gets fun as you start to approach the coastline those down slope winds heating things up, even 80 degrees in san francisco. about 84 in oakland. and right out at the beach elizabeth i think that's a good place to go, those temperatures up into the mid-70s.

looking good. >> love it. enjoy it while it lasts. unfortunately, things also heating up in traffic especially across the san mateo bridge. we are seeing delays. a traffic alert has been issued for the eastbound lanes of 92 approaching the high-rise. we have a car with an overturn accident. the passengers were able to get out of the vehicle. two lanes remain blocked, however. and fire crews are blocking the median on the westbound side of the bridge in the commute direction. both directions of the san mateo bridge may be impacted with worst delays on the eastbound side leaving foster city. a quick check of the maps word of a new accident coming up the guadalupe parkway. so this is in san jose. northbound 87 approaching curtner one lane is blocked. multi-vehicle crash. the rest of the south bay free and clear still moving at the limit. that is traffic. back to you guys. it was touted as a town hall style debate and at times felt more like a shouting or boxing match. it was crazy. president obama, mitt romney

where the public had an opportunity to ask questions and in that cbs news snap poll, 55% of uncommitted voters said they thought president obama had answered their questions, nearly as many 49% said they thought mitt romney was responsive. reporting live in hempstead, new york, i'm randall pinkston. back to you. >> randall, it was certainly compelling to watch this debate and they were trying to appeal to the undecided voters. do you think they were a little too aggressive and maybe turned some people off? >> reporter: of course, i wouldn't be the one to make that judgment. we'll be finding out what undecided voters and all voters think about this debate on election day. let's point this out. that president obama after his first debate had to come back strong. what he was doing to try to get votes was to re-energize the base. that job was begun last week by vice president joe biden. he was accused of being too aggressive, too interrupting too often. but the democrats loved it. and there may have been a turnaround in the polls for the

mornings@cbs5.com. so she apparently did not like it. >> it is a debate, though. the santa clara 49ers stadium isn't even finished yet but it's already getting close to being awarded a super bowl. kcbs radio's matt bigler is down in santa clara where they are cautious with excitement around the mission city right now. i think it looks good. what do you think, matt? >> reporter: well, there's a lot of optimism. it's hard to believe that the super bowl -- the super bowl could be played right here in santa clara in just a couple of years especially since as you mentioned the 49ers stadium is still under construction. you can see the steel beams illuminated by lights this morning. workers hard at work even before dawn to make sure this thing gets completed on schedule. yesterday we did find out that san francisco is in the running, is a finalist for the 2016 or the 2017 super bowls. the city obviously would host the super bowl. it would host the events of the super bowl. but it would be played right here in santa clara.

this morning we talked to santa clara mayor jaime matthews and he said that even though san francisco is behind this bid, his city stands to benefit greatly. >> it's a great deal for sunnyvale, mountain view, milpitas, all the cities around here because there will be lots of exciting things going on to celebrate coming to the bay super bowl coming to the bay for the first time in 25 years. this is a great team to showcase everything that the bay area has to offer from the golden gate to silicon valley. >> reporter: a 2010 study by beacon economics found that a super bowl would generate between $300 million and $500 million for the host city. that's people staying in hotels, eating out in restaurants, and having parties that sort of thing. this is not a done deal. the final decision will be made next may. nfl owners will be making that decision. san francisco is competing against miami for the 2016
